The Governor’s Call to
Service and Hands On Georgia Week
- In making his Call to Service, Georgia's governor
sends a rallying cry to all
Georgians to engage in volunteer service across the
state. In answering the Call, residents
join
together to work on specific goals of civic engagement
by
launching Hands On Georgia Week, a week of service where
thousands of volunteers work throughout Georgia to
improve and strengthen their communities:

Hands On Georgia and The Georgia Department of Community Affairs State Challenge Grants:

On Georgia and The Georgia Department of Community
Affairs received funding from the Georgia General
Assembly to offer challenge grants to communities in the
state interested in implementing volunteer recruitment
and management programs. Communities may apply for
grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. Upon receipt of
the grant, communities are required to match grant
funding with locally raised funds, dollar for dollar,
bringing the leveraged amount of funding for volunteer

Statewide Programs
Initiative
–
Hands On
Georgia will manage, support and help fund programs to
meet specific service goals and objectives across the
state.
-
Statewide
AmeriCorps Program -
AmeriCorps is a
federally-funded program that engages individuals in
both full and part-time service to support a
multitude of community-based organizations and
schools. Hands On Georgia will seek federal and
state funding to support a statewide service corps
that will support community-based organizations,
mobilizing volunteers to fill a variety of community
needs. Hands On Georgia AmeriCorps members will
strengthen local communities by recruiting
volunteers, creating innovative volunteer projects,
training volunteers to act as service leaders, and
improving the volunteer management capacity of
nonprofit organizations.
-
Georgia READS
- Hands On Georgia will challenge neighborhoods and
communities to launch reading and tutoring programs
that ensure that every child can read by the third
grade. This concrete focus will direct the energy
and goodwill of volunteers toward a measurable goal
and, at the same time, parallel the national goals
to 'leave no child behind’ set by President Bush.
Hands On Georgia will provide program start-up
toolkits, training and technical assistance for
reading and tutoring programs and include the best
practices in the fields of volunteerism and
literacy. Our efforts do not stop with
youth/early intervention as Georgia READS also
targets family, adult, English as second language,
school reform, and workforce literacy
-
Youth
Service Initiative
- Through the Youth Service Initiative, Hands On
Georgia will partner with organizations to forge a
network of youth service providers, organize ongoing
and one-time service events, and implement specific
youth-focused service programs.
