The Governor’s Call to Service and Hands On Georgia Week

In making his Call to Service, Georgia’s governor sends a rallying cry to all Georgians to engage in volunteer service across the state.  In answering the Call, residents join together to paint schools, clean-up rivers and streams, reclaim historic cemeteries and properties, build wheelchair ramps, and improve their communities during Hands On Georgia Week.  The economic impact of Hands On Georgia Week 2008 was nearly $1 million!

Hands On Year Round

Hands On Georgia supports individuals, faith-based, office-based and community groups to develop sustainable service projects and volunteer events ranging from tutoring programs to playground-building blitzes.

Hands On Georgia Week

Hands On Georgia Week is HOGA’s signature event.  This week of service occurs in the fall, culminating with Hands On Atlanta Day, the largest single day of service in the country.   In 2008, over 32,000 volunteers performed close to 44,000 hours of service to complete 165 projects statewide, generating more than 9 million media impressions.   Since 2005, Hands On Georgia Week and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day combined have engaged nearly 130,000 volunteers in service resulting in an economic impact of nearly $5 million*!

The Georgia Recovery Corps

The Georgia Recovery Corps (GRC) is a program of Hands On Georgia, Hands On Network, and the Georgia Commission for Service and Volunteerism.  Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the program has three focus areas to assist Georgians impacted by the downturn in the economy:

  1. Employment Services – GRC assists Georgians in entering or re-entering the workforce by providing training on topics such as resume preparation, interviewing, and effective networking;
  2. Volunteer Generation – To enable individuals to build their networks through volunteerism, the program builds the capacity of Georgia’s non-profit sector to effectively manage volunteers;
  3. Resource Development- GRC identifies and develops resources for individuals that are under-employed and unemployed.  The GRC is also promoting opportunities and resources available through the Department of Labor, Georgia Office of Workforce Development and other economic development agencies and organizations.

The GRC has five sites in Athens, Atlanta, Cumming, Harlem, and Macon, Georgia which serve their immediate areas and surrounding counties.  Thus far, the program has formulated partnership with Augusta and Chattahoochee Technical Colleges, Atlanta Workforce Development Agency, Local Chambers of Commerce.
