Hands On Georgia celebrated its third birthday in November
2007. As the organization crossed this threshold, new Board of Directors members
were recruited. We would like to welcome Sylvia Anderson, President of AT&T
Georgia; Billy Blanchard, Executive Vice President, Retail Banking, Columbus
Bank & Trust; John Jamieson, Senior Vice President, Retail Operations, SouthStar
Energy Services LLC; Kevin McCarthy, President & CEO, Tangent Media LLC; Mark
O’Connell, Retired President, United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta; and Vickie
Williamson, Community Volunteer.
The first Board of Advisors for Hands On Georgia was
constituted in January 2008 and includes Lisa Borders, Ingrid Saunders Jones,
Gilbert Miller, Ceasar Mitchell, Mary Moses, Courtney Neely, Kris Nordholz, and
Michael Russell. We are grateful to have such a talented group of leaders
providing counsel and governance to Hands On Georgia.
In this issue you will learn about how communities across the
state celebrated Martin Luther King Day through service. We will also spotlight
two innovative programs: Snug-As-A-Bug in Forsyth County, a program that brings
together seniors, non-profit organizations, and the faith community to solve
housing challenges, as well as the Hands On Savannah Alternative Spring Break
program for Oglethorpe University. This opportunity will allow 15 students to
serve for one week in Savannah and Tybee Island in March 2008.
We hope to see many of you at the 2008 National Conference on
Volunteering and Service which will be in Atlanta June 1–3. Co-sponsored by
Points of Light & Hands On Network and the Corporation for National and
Community Service, the conference is Co-Chaired by Eric Tanenblatt, Hands On
Georgia Board Chair, and Ann W. Cramer, Director North America, IBM Corporate
Citizenship and Corporate Affairs, and will provide inspiration, tools and
resources for those who choose to serve.
Best Regards,

Laurie Grant Nichols
