Hands On Georgia held its second annual affiliate retreat
in Milledgeville on the campus of Georgia College and State University. The
two-day event was hosted by Hands On Milledgeville with more than 40 affiliate
representatives and state challenge grant recipients in attendance.
Workshops were designed for groups based on their level of
knowledge of Hands On programming and volunteer management. Among other topics,
new affiliates and challenge grant recipients participated in discussions about
Needs Assessment and Asset Mapping as well as Project Development. Established
affiliates discussed Team Building and Organizational Development and Strategic
Planning.
Affinity groups like challenge grant recipients and affiliates operating within
their community United Way offices participated in round table discussions. In
addition, training on Hands On Technology was made available. Hands On
Technology provides easy-to-use tools for administrators to market and
communicate with volunteers and to collect and track attendance and impact data.
Peer to peer best practice learning was also available. Nicole McCoy from
Forsyth County discussed partnering with key stakeholders, including the media
and government agencies. Thomas County's Jo Ann McGrotha shared tips on planning
large scale day of service events. Gigi Rolfes, executive director of Hands On
Macon provided information on securing sponsorships and other funding. In
addition, a peer mentorship session allowed established affiliates to meet with
newer ones for Q & A and idea sharing.
The event concluded with a lively presentation from the Hands On Georgia
AmeriCorps members that highlighted their activities for the service year.
