Georgia READS
In the coming months, Hands On Georgia will launch a new
initiative called Georgia READS as an effort to identify volunteer based
literacy efforts that are not currently being addressed by Georgia's
communities. Hands On Georgia is not creating a new literacy program, however
the statewide focus on literacy volunteer opportunities will increase then
number of citizens involved in volunteering for literacy and volunteering
overall.
Through Georgia READS, Georgians will have access to reading materials,
specialized literacy programs and the efforts of volunteers. Communities will
benefit from an infusion of literacy related resources - a more highly skilled
workforce and increased student performance.
Hands On Georgia will introduce a directory and handbook that will provide a
benefit to Georgia's communities on many levels. The Hands On Georgia program
directory will offer communities the best practices in the fields of
volunteerism and literacy.
Hands On Scholars
In his Call to Service in September launching Hands
On Georgia Week 2006, Governor Sonny Perdue, Hands On Georgia's honorary
co-chair, challenged the state's college students to use their talents and
energy to serve their communities. In response, Hands On Georgia, together with
Georgia's colleges and universities, both public and private, will partner to
assist students answer the call and be the change in their communities and the
state as a whole.
The partnership, tentatively called Hands On Scholars, will allow Hands On
Georgia to work with the state's institutions of higher learning in planting the
seeds of civic responsibility in the hearts and minds of their students. The
ultimate goal is for the students, upon leaving their college environments, to
take with them a greater understanding of the important role volunteerism plays
in society and how their participation is vital where ever they ultimately call
home.
