The world’s largest retailer, recently
demonstrated its dedication to help foster statewide volunteerism and civic
engagement. As part of the company’s commitment to Georgia and the communities
it serves, Wal-Mart awarded Hands On Georgia a $250,000 grant that will fund the
continued growth of community volunteer programming and development.
Contributions of this sort are just one way Wal-Mart
contributes to local communities. The retailer also actively supports an
extensive associate volunteer network and joining ‘hands’ with leaders across
Georgia is a logical extension of Wal-Mart’s ‘store of the community’ model.
“Our company believes being members of a community requires more than simply
being a good retailer; we have an obligation to work directly with residents of
the cities and towns that rely on us,” said Wal-Mart Regional General Manager
Tony Samples. “Hands On Georgia, its affiliates and the organization’s volunteer
programming fit well with the Wal-Mart philosophy of community service.”
With its commitment to civic engagement on the local
level, Wal-Mart compliments the Hands On Georgia goal of increasing statewide
community-based volunteerism. The Wal-Mart associate volunteer program,
Volunteerism Always Pays, has become one of the largest volunteer programs in
the United States, and it continues to grow by encouraging associates to take
active volunteer roles in their communities. After an associate serves as a
volunteer with an organization for a certain number of hours, Wal-Mart makes a
financial contribution to the organization in the associate’s name. This allows
an associate’s time contribution to go even further and provide even greater
service to the community.
