Hands On Georgia just completed a successful first
year. Our next year promises to be both challenging and exciting with the
addition of new affiliates and expanded programming. We have completed our
first strategic plan, building a working road map for the next three years. Our
vision for Hands On Georgia is to be the national model for statewide
community-based volunteerism.
To assist us in achieving this goal, Wal-Mart recently
awarded Hands On Georgia a grant in the amount of $250,000. These funds will be
used to further Hands On Georgia’s programmatic thrust to increase the number of
volunteers throughout the state. Thank you Wal-Mart for your commitment to
community volunteerism and your support of civic engagement in Georgia.
I am pleased to welcome three individuals to our
network. New to the Hands On Georgia Board of Directors are Kyle Waide of The
Home Depot and Glen Wilkins of Wal-Mart. Our newest staff member is Suzanne
Wilson Davis. Suzanne joins Hands On Georgia as manager of external affairs.
All three bring a wealth of experience and leadership and we are happy to have
them on board.
Later this year Hands On Georgia will launch its second
annual Hands On Georgia Week. We fully anticipate Georgians to once again
answer the Call to Service and join together to perform service projects in
their communities. Hands On Georgia Week 2006 runs from September 30 through
October 7.
In this issue we announce the recipients of the State
Challenge Grants. Congratulations to all of the affiliates and communities who
received funding. We also report on A Day On, Not A Day Off, Hands On Georgia’s
Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In the Spotlight are
Wal-Mart, Hands On Savannah and a project idea from Hands On Thomas County.
Best Regards,

Eric Tanenblatt,
Chairman
