Melissa Rosa displays her Presidential Service Award.
Four years ago, President
George W. Bush challenged Americans to commit to taking an active role in
bettering the communities in which they live. He invited everyday people
to donate at least 4,000 hours, or the equivalent of two years of service over
the course of their lives.
In 2003, the President's Council on Service and Civic
Participation was created. From this, the President's Volunteer Service Award
program was established to honor Americans who not only perform numerous hours
of volunteer service, but serve as models for others to emulate. The
President's Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups
that have performed a certain number of hours served over a 12-month period or
cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime.
In his travels across the
United States, President Bush honors a local
volunteer, called a USA Freedom Corps Greeter. Two Hands On Macon
volunteers were recently recognized for their dedication to volunteer service
and were chosen as Presidential Greeters.
United States Air Force Second Lieutenant Melissa Rosa greeted the President as
he arrived in Macon, Tuesday, October 10, 2006. Rosa, a second year
medical student at Mercer University School of Medicine, was crowned Miss Macon
in January 2006. She chose as her platform, A Call to Service: Encouraging
Youth Volunteerism. In addition she serves as the spokeswoman for Hands On
Macon. Rosa spreads her message of youth volunteerism through speaking
engagements at schools and community events. She know first hand how
volunteering can benefit young people. Her volunteer efforts started in
high school, through college and continue in medical school. In addition
to Hands On Macon, Rosa has been an active volunteer with many community
organizations including the Athens American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity.
Hands On Georgia Volunteer
of the Year Eloise Hadaway served as the official Presidential Greeter during
President Bush's visit to the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in
Perry, Tuesday, October 31.
