Julie Meehan, Athens/Clarke County, receives a challenge grant from
Governor Perdue.
Governor Sonny Perdue awarded $100,000 in
state challenge grants to 13 Georgia communities committed to implement
community based volunteer recruitment and management programs. Each community
must match the grant award with equal local funds, bringing the total award to
$200,000.
The following communities received a grant of $10,000, the largest grant
available: Athens/Clarke County; Dalton; Forsyth County; Harlem; Macon; Rome;
Savannah and Thomas County.
These recipient communities have demonstrated considerable capacity in
providing exceptional volunteer programming. They serve as a model for other
communities in the state. Two of the volunteer programs target youth in an
effort to build a foundation for continued volunteerism in adulthood. Thomas
County emphasized youth service through a dedicated Youth Volunteer Week during
the summer, and the Rome community plans to establish a computer training camp
for middle school children in the foster care system.
Athens/Clarke County, Hands On Georgia's newest affiliate, plans to build on the
rich tradition of volunteerism in the northeast Georgia region. "Our goal is to
harness this giving spirit and create opportunities that will help the region
and its people achieve the high marks they have set for themselves," said Julie
Meehan, Executive Director of Community Connection of Northeast Georgia.
The remaining community recipients were awarded grants ranging from $2,500 to
$5,500. These recipients include: Coastal Georgia (Glynn and McIntosh Counties
combined), Cook County, Cordele/Crisp County, Dodge County and Eatonton.
The recent announcement marks the first round of grant awards for Fiscal Year
2007. Applications for the second round of $100,000 in funding will be available
in January 2007 with the funds being distributed in March.
