Hands
On Georgia has seen a great deal of activity in the past few months. I'd like to
use this opportunity to recap these and other accomplishments.
Having secured funding from the Georgia General Assembly for two consecutive
fiscal years, Hands On Georgia distributed nearly $200,000 in state challenge
grants to communities interested in developing or expanding volunteer
programming. In March, 12 communities received a total of $100,000 and in
October we distributed an additional $100,000 to 13 communities. The grant
recipients matched the funds dollar for dollar, bringing the total leveraged
amount of funding to almost $400,000 in this year alone. In January 2007 Hands
On Georgia will distribute another round of challenge grants.
As for funding for Hands On Georgia, we welcomed Wal-Mart and BellSouth as
our newest corporate partners. AT&T furthered its commitment to Hands On Georgia
and its mission. This summer Hands On Georgia received a federal AmeriCorps
grant from the Georgia Commission for Service and Volunteerism, a division of
the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. Twelve AmeriCorps members are now
placed in communities across the state building volunteer capacity.
Our affiliate network was very active this year. In June Hands On Georgia
hosted its first affiliate retreat. In July we welcomed Hands On Harlem and
Hands On Milledgeville and in October Athens/Clarke County joined the Hands On
family, bringing our affiliate total to 17.
Hands On Georgia Week 2006 was our most successful ever, engaging more than
30,000 volunteers in projects in all 159 counties of the state.
In this issue we announce the recipients of the second round of State
Challenge Grants. We report on the tremendous success of Hands On Georgia Week
2006. We discuss the Georgia Summit on Volunteerism, Hands On Georgia's first
statewide conference on service and volunteerism. We also introduce the Hands On
Georgia Volunteer of the Year.
I am proud of what Hands On Georgia accomplished this year. We continue to
prevail in our efforts to engage the citizens of Georgia in volunteer service.
We encourage you to seek out ways to become involved in your community. If you
would like to share your ideas on how Hands On Georgia can impact your
community, please e-mail us at

Best Regards,

Eric Tanenblatt,
