Spotlight:
Home Depot Spearheads Corporate Month of Service
Home Depot,
one of Hands On Georgia's signature sponsors, is spearheading
a national "Month of Service" for corporations around
the country. The event, which begins September 1st and culminates
with large projects such as Hands On Atlanta Day on October
1st, is the first initiative in a broader campaign to increase
corporate service by 10 percent over the next two years.
In
response, 29 Fortune 500 companies and large organizations
have formed an historic alliance -- the Hands On Network Corporate
Service Council -- to encourage civic engagement. The group
was organized by Hands On Network, Hands On Georgia's parent
organization, and is chaired by Bob Nardelli, CEO of The Home
Depot. Hands On Network is partnering with the council to
supply strategic planning expertise, a strong network of volunteer
organizations, and proven models for bridging community resources.
The
Corporate Month of Service is encouraging employees of participating
organizations to collectively contribute more than 500,000
hours through more than 2,000 community service projects in
the U.S., Canada and Mexico, and will impact the lives of
more than two million people. Georgia organizations participating
in the Corporate Month of Service include Turner Broadcasting
System, Inc., BellSouth Corporation, The Home Depot, Inc.,
The Coca-Cola Company, and Delta Air
Lines, Inc.
Home
Depot stores in Georgia are working with local Hands On Georgia
affiliates to coordinate projects in their communities, including
Macon, Columbus, Dalton, Rome, Gainesville and Savannah. "By
partnering with The Home Depot, our
affiliates
hope to engage citizens of their local communities and offer
options for year-round volunteering throughout Georgia beyond
the Corporate Month of Service," says Brad Shaw, Senior
Vice President, Corporate Communications & External Affairs
for The Home Depot and Hands On Georgia board member.
"With
the support and engagement of some of the leading companies
in America, we are confident that this effort can inspire
and help activate millions of employees who want to address
critical needs in their communities," says Michelle Nunn,
CEO, Hands On Network and Hands On Georgia board member.
Throughout
the Corporate Month of Service, Home Depot will conduct over
50 "signature" projects in major markets across
North America, and more than 1,800 smaller projects. Every
Home Depot store in the country is participating in a project
and, on Hands On Atlanta Day, a large KaBOOM! playground project
will cap Home Depot's activities here in Georgia.
