Hands
On Atlanta
Michelle Nunn
The Inspiration:
A group of friends who
had just graduated from college and were beginning their professional lives were
looking for opportunities to volunteer in Atlanta. However, none of those
opportunities were in the evenings or on the weekend when they could help.
The Action:
Hands On Atlanta was
founded in 1989 and Michelle Nunn was hired as the first part time executive
director whose goal was to build strong community partnerships that were
supported by flexible volunteer action. Hands On Atlanta now has a staff of
50, 120 AmeriCorps members working with the Atlanta Public School System, and
40,000 volunteers who have contributed an estimated 5.5 million hours of service
to programs that directly impact Atlanta’s citizens and communities. Michelle
went on to co-found Hands On Network – a national alliance of volunteer civic
hubs – which recently merged with the Points of Light Foundation.
