Boys Who DARE

Kim Boykin

The Inspiration:

In 2003, Kim Boykin was a single mom with a 5-year-old son.   He would often see her reading but did not see any male role models reading.  Kim wanted to change that, but not just for her son.

The Action:

Boys who Dream About Reading Every day (Boys Who D.A.R.E.) reading program is a grass-roots community organization designed to promote literacy in young males in metro Atlanta.  They provide thematic literary events created to offer early literacy intervention, expand educational experiences, and cultural learning. Each month young boys are introduced to a new book by a different adult male role model including authors, celebrities, athletes, police officers and fire fighters.  In addition, Boys who D.A.R.E. exposes these youth to activities that focus on character education and increase social skills and cultural awareness.  Each child leaves with a gift of a new book and parents and children are encouraged to continue reading at home.

Their ultimate goal is to show boys that men enjoy reading, that reading is fun and that as long as they continue to read they can make their dreams come true, because avid readers are leaders.
