Youth
Media Minds of America
Roy Gipson
The Inspiration:
Roy Gipson was the Director of the Media
Ministry at his church. Often young teens would ask if they could help with
the video equipment but the church did not have a program to train them.
The Action:
Roy Gipson founded Youth Media Minds of
America (YMMA) to provide state-of-the-art multimedia communications training
and experience to at-risk and underserved youth, ages 14-18. They learn how to
operate a camera, mix audio and edit tape – all skills that can help them build
a career. But there is a catch – the youth must stay in school to participate.
Career preparation is not the only goal of this non-profit; the heart behind
YMMA is to provide a healthy way for kids to direct their energies while
developing life-skills. YMMA believes that offering this "show me" generation
specialized training in multimedia technology, complemented with relevant life
skills curriculum, will serve as an opportunity for youth to re-channel their
energy and build a foundation for success.
