Warrick Dunn
The Inspiration:
The oldest of six
children, Warrick Dunn grew up watching his mother, Betty Smothers, provide for
him and his siblings. Betty, a single mother, worked endless hours as a Baton
Rouge police officer working extra shifts during her off-duty hours. During
Warrick’s senior year of high school, Betty’s life was taken in the line of
duty, leaving Warrick with the responsibility of keeping the family together.
Although she worked extremely hard all her life, Betty was never able to realize
the American dream of owning her own home.
The Action:
“Homes for the Holidays”
was established in 1998 and is dedicated to providing opportunities for
economically-disadvantaged single parents and children who have demonstrated a
commitment to achieve financial independence and stability.
The program honors Betty’s dream of
homeownership for other single mothers.
As of May 2007, the program has assisted 69 single mothers and 181 children and
dependents to achieve first-time homeownership.
