Peers Advocating
Leadership and
Service (PALS)
Mary Evelyn Feibelman
The Inspiration:
When Mary Evelyn Feibelman’s kids were in
elementary school, she saw that many of their peers were not doing well in
school. As her kids grew she saw that many high school kids had no structure
or positive outlet in their lives, and years later they still were not doing
well in school.
The Action:
Mary Evelyn created Peers Advocating
Leadership and Service (PALS) to blend the needs of at risk youth and high
school students in need of quality, effective community service. The basic
design for PALS is to offer leadership and service opportunities to middle and
high school students as they address the academic needs of first through third
graders. The elementary students are paired with an older student (their PAL)
and together they address individual academic needs as presented by the
elementary school teacher. The PALS program includes a Family Enrichment
Program as well as an Honor Night to recognize its volunteers. PALS has
recruited and trained 1150 high school students in the last 10 years to tutor
and mentor over 3,000 elementary students considered at risk for failure. In
2006 89% of PALS elementary students passed to the next grade.
