Nepenthic Society

Lorraine Conklin

The Inspiration:

Lorraine Conklin was born prematurely in France, and her parents put kittens in her crib to comfort her.  Thirty years later, she moved to Thomas County and was in a bad car accident that left her temporarily blind.   She promised if she regained her sight she would devote herself to caring for others – specifically animals.

The Action:

Lorraine takes in animals on her farm in Thomas County.  They are not your typical strays.  Through the Nepenthic Society, a non profit organization she founded, Lorraine receives and rescues wild animals in need.  No animal is ever turned away.  Her “stray” animals include newborn squirrels and possums, beavers, otters, bob cats, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, deer, skunks (yes, skunks), rabbits, bats, armadillos, birds, including numerous birds of prey, and even a bear.  Lorraine and the Nepenthic Society volunteers care for and rehabilitate the animals until they are fit to go back into the wild. This is a round the clock job, particularly from spring until fall when the young animals are fed by bottles every three hours.   The Nepenthic Society is successful primarily because of the Lorraine’s dedication to these little, often overlooked creatures.
