Coastal
Pet Rescue
Lisa Scarbrough
The Inspiration:
Lisa Scarbrough had been rescuing injured and
homeless pets for much of her life under the guidance of her father. She
realized that there were more needy pets than homes and wanted to find a way to
change their situations for the better.
The Action:
Scarbrough founded the organization February
5, 2003, her 24th birthday. Coastal Pet Rescue volunteers provide veterinary
care and foster homes for homeless animals rescued from county shelters, turned
over by good samaritans, or left behind by previous owners.
In addition to rescues, her organization also
conducts humane education programs including school and business lectures,
hurricane evacuation planning, and pet first aid and CPR. In 2005, the
organization initiated a feral cat trap-neuter-return program, through which
over 300 cats have been trapped, preventing over 126,000,000 more stray cats
from roaming the streets of Savannah.
