Kate’s
Club
Kate Atwood
The Inspiration:
When Kate Atwood was 6 years old her mother was diagnosed with
cancer. The only think she knew about cancer was that it started with a “k”. Just as she had mistaken the alphabet, she had mistaken the
severity of the illness. When she was 12 her mother passed away. She tried to
fill the void with school, sports and activities but it wasn’t until she was a
counselor at a bereavement camp that she discovered the power of spiritual
healing from sharing with others who has experienced a loss.
The Action:
Kate created Kate’s Club based on four cornerstones: fun
(laughter is the best medicine, community (peer support group), safety (a
healing environment) and long term support. Kate’s Clubs provide grieving
children and their families with an environment where they can re-engage in life
and turn a potentially debilitating loss into a growth opportunity
