Pickin’
Up the Pieces Relief Corps
Linda
Edwards
The Inspiration:
Linda Edwards watched as
Hurricane Katrina devastated rural and underdeveloped coastal Mississippi.
The Action:
Linda and her husband
co-founded Pickin’ Up the Pieces Relief Corps, an all-volunteer non-profit
relief agency dedicated to rebuilding Pearlington and Hancock County,
Mississippi, ground zero of Hurricane Katrina’s 40 foot storm surge. Linda is
Pickin’ Up the Pieces’ Administrative Director and missions organizer. Pickin’
Up the Pieces provided Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas gifts to families and
staff of 2 Hancock County elementary schools in 2005 and 2006. She has led over
a dozen mission trips to renovate and rebuild homes for Hancock County
families. She has assisted families with securing rebuilding grants. Linda’s
outstanding work through Pickin’ Up the Pieces has filtered more than $100,000
in contributions and in-kind donations to devastated Hancock County and has
provided more than 100 volunteers to various community rebuilding efforts.
Linda’s leadership has given the Savannah community a unique opportunity to aid
sister community in great need, thus not only rebuilding devastated communities
abroad but also galvanizing and enriching her own community.
