The Corporation for National and Community Service commissions a national study each
year which ranks cities and states on their volunteering rates. Based on data provided by
the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this year’s study shows that
despite the onset of an economic recession during 2008, volunteering rates have held
steady at 26.4 percent of the U.S. population.
How does Georgia rank?
- Overall, there were 1.7 million volunteers in Georgia;
- 23.9% of residents volunteer - ranking Georgia 41st among the 50 states and Washington, DC;
- 213.6 million hours of service donated;
- 30 hours per resident - ranking Georgia 42nd among the 50 states and Washington, DC;
- $4.3 billion of service contributed to the state.
